This event is aimed at pre-service teachers and teachers unfamiliar with Levels 7–10 History who are possibly teaching History at these levels for the first time. Experienced teachers who feel they need more guidance with the curriculum, assessment ideas and resources may also find this event worthwhile.

12.35 pm – 1.20 pm Session 1: Introducing the Victorian Curriculum: History 7–10
Adam Brodie-McKenzie, Curriculum Manager (History and Civics), Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA)

This session will present an introduction to the Victorian Curriculum: History 7–10. Firstly, this session will provide an explanation of the structure of the Victorian Curriculum, some advice on developing a learning program and a discussion on the importance of the Historical Concepts and Skills strand. Secondly, this session will focus on assessing principles through an exploration of Achievement Standards, Indicative Progress and the development of assessment tasks.

1.40 pm – 3.10 pm Session 2: Past Forward: Bringing Levels 7–10 History to Life!
Adam Given and Sarah Mangan, Norwood Secondary College

This fast-paced, resource-rich session will provide an essential overview of teaching middle school History, focusing on curriculum planning, historical thinking skills, inclusive teaching, and assessment strategies. Designed for pre-service teachers, teachers new to Levels 7–10 History, and experienced educators seeking fresh ideas, this session offers a plethora of practical resources and actionable insights to inspire confidence and creativity in the classroom.

Adam Given and Sarah Mangan have a combined teaching experience of over eighteen years, including extensive expertise with VCE History. Adam has taught all year levels of History, specialising in VCE Revolutions, and has presented on literacy strategies in History classrooms.

Sarah has taught History at all year levels and worked in a variety of educational contexts across Victoria, from regional schools to newly established and long-standing institutions. Together, Adam and Sarah bring a wealth of knowledge and practical strategies to support engaging and effective History teaching. Come ready for a show tune and a series of dad jokes!
3.10 pm – 3.30 pm Session 3: The ‘Best Bits’ of Teaching 7–10 History

Experienced History teachers will share their favourite things about teaching History at Levels 7–10. This pre-recorded video will highlight some ‘best bits’ that can support your teaching and will be made available to registered participants to view again after the event.
