Yingabeal: The Wurundjeri Scarred Tree at Heide Museum of Modern Art

A short documentary about Yingabeal, the scarred tree at Heide Museum of Modern Art. The film introduces the viewer to the significance of scarred tree in Indigenous culture for making back objects, but also way-finding through the Australian bush. It includes interviews with Uncle Bill Nicholson, a Wurundjeri elder, historian Dr Jim Poulter, curator Kendrah Morgan and Heide’s head gardener Dugald Noyes. The documentary can be used in conjunction with the education kit ‘Yingabeal: Indigenous Geography at Heide.

Yingabeal: Indigenous Geography at Heide

An education kit designed for year 7 students undertaking the Victorian History Curriculum unit Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures. The kit builds on the information and issues presented in the Yingabeal: The Wurundjeri Scarred Tree at Heide Museum of Modern Art documentary and should be used concurrently. Key Indigenous concepts covered in the kit include: land management practices, significant beliefs, the use of natural resources, cultural protocols and conservation issues.

The History in Place Project

Produced by Culture Victoria, the Heritage Council of Victoria and the History Teachers’ Association of Victoria.

History in Place is a film-making project for students visiting museums or heritage sites. It can also be adapted for use with primary sources in the classroom. The toolkit includes an instructional documentary, PowerPoint, storyboard worksheet, assessment rubric, excursion forms and examples of student work. This resource is suitable for upper primary and all secondary school students.
